Wii Bit of Help For Fitness
Written by Bill Bean Monday, 07 December 2009 05:00
A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse study found that the Nintendo video game system doesn’t do much to burn calories — perhaps just a wee bit. Since its launch in 2007, Wii Fit has sold more than 21 million units and is now the third best-selling video game of all time.
In October, Nintendo launched Wii Fit Plus, an upgrade of the original Wii Fit, which features 15 new balance board games, including juggling and skateboarding, plus three new yoga poses and three additional strength-training exercises.
Wii Fit will be a popular gift this Christmas, but people should think twice about buying it if they are only interested in fitness.
John Porcari, professor of exercise and sport science who oversaw the UW-L study, said the Wii Fit workout was extremely mild, saying a brisk walk is a much better workout. He said people cannot depend on Wii Fit alone to meet the daily recommended guidelines of at least 30 minutes of physical activity.
