Moderate Weight Loss in Obese People Improves Heart Function

Obese patients who lost a moderate amount of weight by eating less and exercising more improved their cardiovascular health, says a study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.  Results of this two-year study, published in the Dec. 15, 2009, issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, showed that weight loss led to improvement in four key measures of heart and vascular health.

HDL Cholesterol

How many of you consider yourself a skeptic? I know I do. When an expert or authority makes a pronouncement that Cause A leads to Effect B, I'm a lot more likely to accept his or her ideas if this expert can explain how or why Cause A leads to Effect B or in some way describe the mechanism of its action. I have a hard time going on faith alone, especially since our playing field is littered with "experts", many of whom disagree with each other. So when our experts tell us that aerobic exercise causes an increase in the amount of HDL cholesterol in our bloodstream, I would like to know how it happens.

Dietary Fiber

Everyone knows that fiber is a necessary component of any healthy diet, especially Americans. What people in our great nation do not so widely realize is that Americans arguably have the lowest dietary fiber intake in the world, even less than those under privileged members of third world nations. These people, though underprivileged and uneducated in proper dietary behavior are less predisposed to low fiber related cancers, metabolic disorders, heart, and cardiovascular diseases than Americans.
