FIT VS. FAT STUDY SHEDS LIGHT ON DEBATE

In the battle to stay healthy it's becoming clearer that being active is more important than just maintaining a good diet.  A study published in the January issue of the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine shows that exercise is a more important component of overall fitness than diet alone.

The study or 36 adults was divided into three categories; a control group, a group that dieted but didn't raise their level of activity, and a third group that was directed to diet and exercise. Although both diet only and diet and activity groups lost a similar amount of body fat, around 10%, only the diet and exercise group showed an increase in internal health.

"We saw marked improvements in cardiovascular fitness, blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and cholesterol levels in the individuals who regularly exercised," said study director Enette Larson-Meyer.
