What do you think of when you hear the words "corporate wellness"? Whether it's the abstract notion of fiscal responsibility or the vivid image of neckties flapping to and fro in a mass workout, corporate wellness is big business - and it's here to stay.
As a fitness professional, you may be primed and ready to deliver top-notch services for your individual clients. But for those considering branching into other areas of personal training, corporate wellness may be just the thing: Personal trainers are uniquely poised to design and deliver fitness assessments and large-scale group exercise programs, as well as holistic and integrative health programming to the modern workplace.
What is Corporate Wellness?
One of the overarching goals of any comprehensive health promotion program is to attempt to influence the attitudes and actions of any organization's most valuable resource - its people.
Employers know that by incorporating on site wellness programs into their work culture, they can enhance productivity, improve morale, and reduce absenteeism. Businesses with wellness programs in place offer an added incentive for recruitment and retention of talent: In some instances, health promotion can prove to be a valuable tool in making the deal.
Employees enjoy the benefits of lower stress levels, improved energy and a sense of ownership in their own health. In fact, there is growing evidence that suggests that well-designed health promotion initiatives can successfully impact behaviors such as smoking, high-risk alcohol use, exercise, nutritional habits, seat belt usage, and stress among employees.
With that in mind, corporate wellness programs are designed around a company's needs, budget, and logistical limitations. Programs can range from as simple as a noon-time walks to organized boot camps to as sophisticated as comprehensive, medically-supervised systems.
