Written by Oliver Jordan
Athletes need to be extremely aware of their diet. After all, playing sports requires that a person have speed, flexibility, strength, and agility as well as stamina. Athletes generally focus on building up their stamina and their strength but forget the benefits of nutrition and flexibility. There are plenty of benefits of nutrition and flexibility that can help athletes excel at their sport. Most athletes tend to resort to junk food and foods that are high in carbohydrates. Athletes also tend to focus more on meats to build up their strength. The fact is that flexibility is equally important. This is why stretching exercises that help improve flexibility are an essential part of training in all sports. Flexibility can also be increased with the help of the correct food items.
Given below is a list of food items that should be included in the diet of:
- Include a lot of dark green vegetables in your every day diet. Dark green vegetables, especially the ones with high water content are very beneficial. They are very high in minerals, they cleanse the body, they are high in fiber and they fight acid build up. Vegetables like spinach, chard, seaweed, wheat grass, and parsley and barley grass juice will increase your flexibility.
- Grains and lentils are nutrition-dense foods. All athletes must include a lot of grains in their everyday diet. Grains are high in fiber, proteins and anti-oxidants. The fiber in these grains help athletes make the most of their stretching exercises.
- Fats are also essential for the body, but it is important to consume fats from good sources. Rather than consuming animal fats or totally avoiding fats, it is important to consume plant fats. These fats are the essential building blocks for the body and they increase the elasticity of the tissues that increases flexibility in athletes.
- Athletes should include almonds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, avocado, coconut, all dry fruits and cold pressed oils in their diet. "Athletes who do not get enough of these nutrients may also include a few supplements in their daily diet to get all the essential nutrients needed for increasing flexibility. You must ensure that you have good quality supplements that are approved for sport persons.
