For Big Athletes, Fat and Fit a Myth

Superior size and strength can mean championships, scholarships and million-dollar paydays for today’s athletes. But a comparison of professional baseball players and football players reveals that the larger professional athletes — specifically football linemen — are at greatly increased risk of cardiometabolic syndrome. These findings come on the heels of media reports suggesting that professional football players are twice as likely to die before age 50 as professional baseball players.

Energy Drinks Work -- In Mysterious Ways

Runners clutching bottles of energy drink are a common sight, and it has long been known that sugary drinks and sweets can significantly improve athletes' performance in endurance events. Writing in the latest issue of The Journal of Physiology, Ed Chambers and colleagues not only show that sugary drinks can significantly boost performance in an endurance event without being ingested, but so can a tasteless carbohydrate – and they do so in unexpected ways.
